Whole Class Buddy Reading Vs SSR

Whole school fluency focus in Reading to replace SSR. "Unfortunately, independent silent reading has not been proven to be an effective way to improve reading fluency (NRP, 2000). Programs such as ‘sustained silent reading’ (SSR) or drop everything and read (DEAR) have benefits for fluent readers, but not for those who are struggling with fluency”.


Essentials of Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention (2020). PNINS is trialing whole class buddy reading to replace SSR for 15 minutes a day. Students are paired (low-middle, middle-high). The text they read is the same, and is read out aloud. This focus has stemmed from trialing the use of the DIBELS assessment a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of literacy skills.
